2012 Day at the Capitol/Chapter Leadership & Legislative Retreat
Thursday, February 9, 2012
Thursday is reserved for meetings on Capitol Hill. We encourage every chapter to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with your respective Congressmen and Senators to voice NAIOP's legislative concerns on critical issues. NAIOP will provide materials and educational sessions on the issues most pressing to our association and industry during CL&LR - but first you need to schedule your appointments!
Note: A room will be reserved again this year at the Capitol Hill Club for attendees to congregate before, during and after meeting their representatives. A light buffet lunch and refreshments will be served. Luggage may not be taken to Capitol Hill and should be stored with the bellhop at the Capital Hilton.
A checklist to schedule a meeting with your Congressional representatives:
Middle of January:
- Send a letter (sample letter provided) requesting an appointment.
- Follow-up with a phone call to the members office directly or access the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your senator's and/or representative's office to speak with their scheduler. If the elected official is not available during the meeting, ask to meet with the senior staff responsible for covering our priority issues.
- Notify NAIOP once you have scheduled your meetings.
The first week of February:
- Confirm any outstanding appointments with congressional offices.
- Notify NAIOP of any changes or additions to your scheduled meetings.
If you need assistance in scheduling your appointments, contact the Government Affairs Department at (703) 904-7100.
Tips to Successfully Schedule Your Meeting on Capitol Hill
- Have a constituent from the representative's home district request an appointment.
- Provide the scheduler a list of constituents who will be attending the meeting and the main issues you wish to cover.
- If your elected official is unable to participate in the meeting, ask if they would be available for a photo opportunity afterwards.
